47 clans and 245 commanders
From the Ashikaga, Oda, Toyotomi and Tokugawa to the Satomi, Ashina, the Saika gunners and the Ryukyu Kingdom. Major figures come with a profile, achievements, life story and famous words, and 190 of them with a portrait.
108 battles and a timeline
From the Ōnin War to the Summer Siege of Osaka, with forces, background, course and consequences, each rated as decisive for the realm, for a region, or local. The Ōnin War, where the age began, has its own in-depth essay.
82 castles and strongholds
From Azuchi, Odawara, Ichijōdani and the Ishiyama Hongan-ji to Shuri. Each has the year it was built and the year it fell, so only the castles standing in a given year appear on the map.
366 stories
Nobunaga’s dance before Okehazama, Kenshin sending salt to his enemy, the Sanadamaru… Each story is tagged as recorded in sources, handed down as tradition, or a later invention.
Arms & armour
27 entries from the matchlock, cannon and fire-pots to armour, crested helmets, horo cloaks and banners, warships, and famous blades and tea treasures — how they worked, with a story for each.
The age in paintings
Battle screens of Nagashino, Sekigahara and Osaka, woodblock prints and more — all public-domain or CC0 works from Wikimedia Commons. Tap to view them large.
What you can do
Slide through the years
Drag the slider from 1467 to 1615 and the map redraws. Autoplay spends five seconds on each year, so you can follow every change.
Chart the rise and fall
Pick up to six clans and compare how many provinces each held over time, or see the balance of power in any single year.
Follow castles and people
Tap a castle for its story and nearby battles. Go from a commander to his battles, and from a battle to the map of its year.
Who was alive that year
Filter to commanders alive in the year on screen, with their age at the time.
Glossary and period guides
134 terms such as shugo, kokujin and gekokujō. Tap a highlighted word in any text to see what it means.
