iPhone / iPad / Apple Watch / Android App

Kifu Reader (棋譜リーダー)

Replay, read and analyse shogi games.

A shogi game viewer for the latest professional games and your own. Candidate-move analysis, a full-game evaluation graph and mate search are all powered by a shogi engine running on your device.

♟ The Suisho5 evaluation function is a free download. Positions are never sent to a server for analysis.

The app’s interface is in Japanese.

Open a game

Latest games

Browse the latest professional shogi games and replay any of them on the board right away, with player names, event and date.

Import your own games

Supports KIF, KI2 and CSA. Paste from the clipboard, pick a file from the Files app, or use “Open in” from another app’s share sheet. Game records exported from Shogi Wars’ analysis screen can be imported too.

Set up any position

Place pieces anywhere on the board, including pieces in hand, then play on from there and start analysing.

Analyse with AI

Position analysis

See up to five candidate moves for the current position, each with an evaluation and its principal variation. The engine keeps thinking while the position is open, so the longer you wait, the deeper it reads.

Full-game analysis and graph

Analyse every position in a game and see the balance of the game as a line graph. Choose 0.5 to 3 seconds per move. While it runs, the move actually played and the engine’s best move are shown side by side, and big swings are listed so you can jump to them.

Mate search

Check whether the current position has a forced mate by consecutive checks, and replay the mating sequence move by move. You set the time limit.

Study mode

Tap a candidate move to play it and explore lines that differ from the game. Analysis continues in every branch.

Suisho5 — free

Download the Suisho5 evaluation function (about 23 MB) for free to make analysis much faster and stronger. All analysis runs on your device; positions are never sent to a server.

Results are kept

Full-game results are saved per game, so reopening a game shows its graph instantly. If you stop part-way, you can resume where you left off.

Keep and carry

Saved games and history

Save games and find the ones you opened again in your history. Imported games stay in their own list.

Saved positions

Name and save any position you want to come back to, then load it from the board editor to continue studying.

Apple Watch

Replay games synced from your iPhone move by move on Apple Watch.

Dark mode

The board and the whole interface follow your device’s light or dark appearance.

Pricing

  • Free. Viewing, importing, position analysis, full-game analysis and mate search are all included.
  • The Suisho5 download is free as well.
  • A banner ad is shown on the board screen. On iPhone and iPad, a one-time in-app purchase removes ads; it doesn’t unlock any extra features.
  • There is no “Remove Ads” purchase on Android.

Android

Kifu Reader (棋譜リーダー) is also available on Google Play. The main features are the same as on iPhone and iPad: the latest games, importing KIF / KI2 / CSA, setting up positions, position analysis, the full-game evaluation graph, mate search, study mode and the free Suisho5 download.

Game files can be opened from your file manager or another app’s share menu. There is no counterpart to the Apple Watch app. The app is free and shows a banner ad on the board screen.

Requirements

iPhone and iPad with iOS 15.0 or later, Apple Watch with watchOS 8.0 or later, and Android phones with Android 7.0 or later. The interface is in Japanese.

An internet connection is needed to fetch the latest games. Once Suisho5 is downloaded, imported games can be replayed and analysed offline.
